The next film in our ongoing monthly series of great classic films will be Alexander Mackendrick's electrifying 1957 film noir, SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, starring Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Martin Milner, and Susan Harrison.
On Saturday, January 29 at 11:00 am, Cinema 21 will present this classic film on the BIG SCREEN!
Elliot Lavine will once again host this screening and provide an illuminating introduction as well.
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS is the torrid tale of dangerously egocentric New York City newspaper columnist J. J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster, in a performance not so subtly based on Walter Winchell) who uses the power of his position to destroy the lives of those who stand in his way -- including the rebellious young jazz musician (Martin Milner) who looks to steal the hand of Hunsecker's young sister (Susan Harrison) in marriage. Aiding him in this pursuit is a desperately conniving publicity agent (Tony Curtis) who will stoop to the lowest depths in order to please the monstrous ego of power-mad Hunsecker.
Probably no other film from the 1950s so vividly captures the frenetic fusion of image and music as perfectly as SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS with its pulsating soundtrack provided (live on film) by Chico Hamilton and his Quintet.
The brilliant screenplay is a collaboration between Ernest Lehman and Clifford Odets who provide, in the process, one of the most oft-quoted films this side of Casablanca. The dazzling black & white cinematography is by James Wong Howe, whose work forcefully leaps off the screen, while director Alexander Mackendrick guides the whole affair with utmost assurance. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
